Tokyo: On Friday, Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced that he and Donald Trump had agreed to engage in “productive” discussions during future price negotiations. After the discussions, Ishiba said to writers,” Investment, no tariffs.” He stated that Japan continues to press Washington to repeal all of its new tariff measures and that he supports plans to encourage Chinese investment to boost American employment in exchange. The two officials spoke shortly after Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s top tax negotiator, left for Washington for a second round of discussions with his American counterparts. The United States had not agreed to the Chinese calls in the earlier discussions. Ishiba claimed he had reminded Trump that the U.S. government had urged the country to repeal all new tariffs on imports from Japan, but the U.S. president had not provided a particular response. I said to writers,” I expressed my anticipation for a successful conversation to remain held, and we agreed.” A major contributor to Japan’s trade with the United States and a key contributor to economic growth, the United States is imposing a 25 % tariff on imports of automobiles. Trump has reduced some of those levies, but he has continued to impose higher taxes on aluminum and steel. Trump requested the two leaders speak at 45 minutes about a range of topics, including security cooperation between the two friends and the subsequent trip of the U.S. president to the Middle East, according to Ishiba.
