Although experts believe this goal is impossible, US President Donald Trump issued executive orders on Friday that aim to increase nuclear power production by tenfold in the next 25 years. The energy minister is given more speedy access to advanced reactor designs and projects thanks to the orders, which remove a portion of the power from the long-standing regulator of nuclear safety. This program comes as energy use rises as a result of more data centers and AI development. Tech firms, venture capitalists, and states are all competing for the power supply, which is putting pressure on the electricity generator. Interior minister Doug Burgum claimed,” We have enough energy to get the AI arms race with China.” The industry’s “50” times will depend on what we do in the next five times that are related to energy. It seems unlikely to be possible to increase radioactive production by tenfold within the given timeframe. With just two large, brand-new reactors constructed in the US in the past almost 50 years, there are now no functional next-generation reactors. These Georgia-based units experienced major delays and price shortfalls of more than$ 17 billion. According to the US energy information administration, 94 nuclear reactors currently account for about 19 % of the country’s electricity, while fossil fuels contribute 60 % and renewables contribute 21 %. During the Oval Office filing, Trump expressed his excitement as he addressed the industry’s slowdown by referring to radioactive as a “hot business” and adding,” It’s time for radioactive, and we’re going to do it very big.” The requests aim to rebuild the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, speed up the review procedures, and establish an 18-month decision-making date. They call for emergency procedures to secure uranium resources, and they have plans for three empirical units by July 4, 2026. More provisions include looking into reactor placement on national and defense sites and evaluating closed plant reopenings.
