‘He should be alive today’: Ilhan Omar marks 5 years since George Floyd’s murder with call to 'dismantle systemic racism'
Ilhan Omar expresses his condolences for the terrible crime of George Floyd.

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar stated on the second anniversary of George Floyd’s death that neither the urgent need to revolution America’s criminal justice system nor his death should never be forgotten. Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, stated in a series of social media posts,” It has been five years since George Floyd’s murder. He ought to be intact right now. No number of rewriting or politicking will change that notion. She continued,” We must commit ourselves to the pursuit of justice on this day—and every day.” That includes eradicating structural racism and fundamentally altering how we approach legal justice.” George Floyd was a 46-year-old Black man who died in Minneapolis in 2020 when white police officer Robert Chauvin knelt on his throat for more than nine hours. The shooting, which was recorded on a policeman’s telephone, sparked protests against racial injustice and police brutality all over the world. Chauvin was afterwards found guilty of murder and given a 22-year prison sentence. Five years after George Floyd’s dying, people all over the country remembered Mar’s information. His relatives gathered near his grave in Houston, where Floyd was born. Citizens in Minneapolis, where he was killed, held a chapel service, a light ceremony, and a church music at George Floyd Square, the street corner that is now named after him. Omar reflected on Floyd’s death’s wider influence in a separate article. Her crime” sparked immediate discussions about the state of our country, the state of police, and the state of our fairness system,” she wrote. She argued that current efforts to remove police reforms and diversity initiatives that were introduced in the midst of Floyd’s death show that there is a backslide — a backlash, as we have seen every day there is a motion for the independence of Black people, for equality, for justice. Measures introduced in Minneapolis are in danger because the administration of US President Donald Trump has questioned their viability, labeling the files used “flawed” and the contracts “handcuffing” local authorities. Mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey, but, vowed that the town would abide by the new consent order without any delay. Trump has reversed policies governing diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ) across government and military bases across the country. The Black Lives Matter Plaza has been taken down in Washington, DC. A well-known Floyd painting was just destroyed as part of a building teardown in Houston. Omar even criticized those who demanded a pardon for Chauvin. We are hearing cruel pleas for Chauvin to be pardoned, she wrote. He will remain in jail despite receiving a provincial pardon, facing a state murder conviction. His posts come when surveys reveal a decline in public perception that Floyd’s death caused lasting change among the people of this nation and around the world. A new Pew Research Center poll found that 72 % of Americans believe that there hasn’t been much advancement in Black people’s lives. Since reaching its peak in 2020, Black Lives Matter aid has also decreased by 15 %. Floyd’s relatives and followers have continued to honor his memory and advocate for long-term reform. ” We still need to do a lot more before we can observe real justice and liberation,” Omar said. However, as George Floyd’s home grieves his loss, I’m thinking about him now. Does he retain control always.
