Following fatal revenge episodes in which three foreign citizens were killed, West African authorities sent troops to the Valencia citrus-farming territory in Eastern Cape state on Monday. A local man’s alleged murder occurred during a table fight involving both locals and foreigners on Saturday night, prompting the crime to break out. In what officials described as “random” deeds of retaliation, the murder started when members of the community” took the roads and apparently attacked international nationals” according to a police statement quoted by AFP. In addition to the North American man who was killed in the first attack, at least ten other people were hurt in the following problems as well as three foreigners who died. Despite local media reports that many of the victims were Rwandan, authorities have no confirmed their countries. We can’t believe they are from a particular nation, according to police spokesperson Majola Nkohli. The crime took place near the city of Addo, which is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Gqeberha, where thousands of annual migrant workers, many of them foreigners, work during the citrus harvest. More than 100 people have sought shelter at a neighborhood police place, according to reports. The most industrialized nation in the area, South Africa, continues to attract a large number of immigrants looking for work who frequently experience racist abuse, discrimination, and abuse.
