On Wednesday, 16 states, largely under the control of Democrats, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asking for a federal court to stop significant funding cuts and program changes at the National Science Foundation ( NSF). The state claimed that the actions threaten the country’s position as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics ) Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, is in charge of the complaint, which was filed in federal court in Manhattan. She said that the government’s attacks on fundamental scientific principles and crucial efforts to promote diversity in STEM may harm both our business and our national security. The NSF has begun ending programs that encourage the participation of women, minorities, and people with disabilities in STEM areas, according to the complaint. Additionally, it raises objections to a new rule that only covers 15 % of total provides for funding for direct research expenses, such as facility area and equipment. According to The New York Times, the petition asserts that these steps go against established Parliamentary objectives. Since 1980, the NSF has urged Congress to support greater STEM membership. The foundation’s recent plan priorities have been changed, removing support for programs promoting diversity, equity, and participation. NSF producer Sethuraman Panchanathan resigned a few days after the offer refunds began. More than 1,700 NSF research provides had been canceled as of Wednesday, causing$ 1.4 billion in cuts overall. The State University of New York, according to one claim in the petition, was lose$ 18 million as a result. The NSF’s fiscal year 2024 funds was$ 9 billion, but the Trump administration’s draft budget proposes a 55 % reduction. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin are among the various claims that have signed on to the complaint.
