The US Supreme Court on Friday affirmed Donald Trump‘s decision, allowing his administration to withdraw the momentary constitutional position granted to over 500, 000 Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan refugees. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem‘s urgent request was granted by the court, properly halting a Biden-era program that had granted citizens from those four nations charitable pardon. The decision strips hundreds of thousands of people of their legal rights to operate or remain in the country and exposes them to deportation. Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor, two democratic judges, disagreed. The court, according to Jackson, “had failed to take into account the disastrous effects of allowing the government to abruptly upend the lives and livelihoods of almost half a million noncitizens while their lawful claims are pending.” It attempted to control the growing flow at the southwestern border. However, the Department of Homeland Security made a statement in October 2024 that it would not expand the two-year parole time after it had expired. Noem’s decision to end the plan was challenged by disrupted parties and rights organizations like the Haitian Bridge Alliance. They warned that those who were granted parole had “become undocumented, officially unskilled, and subject to large expulsion” if the Trump administration’s action was upheld. A lower court judge, Indira Talwani in Massachusetts, had previously ruled that the administration could not deny the status of each person without personal review. The Supreme Court’s most recent decision, however, prevents litigation from advancing. D. John Sauer, the attorney general, claimed in court documents that Talwani lacked the authority to act, arguing that Noem was entitled to withdraw the program under national immigration legislation. He made note of the fact that the same rules gave Mayorkas the right to initiate it in the first position. The growth comes as a result of growing conflicts over immigration enforcement. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security discovered that up to 500 so-called” sanctuary jurisdictions” could reduce funding from the government because of their inaction. Trump’s Friday routine also included an appearance at the Oval Office for businessman Elon Musk and a Pennsylvania rally to market a new US Steel investment.
