Japan’s Meteorological Agency ( JMA ) reports that a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck off the eastern coast of Hokkaido on Saturday evening. At a depth of about 20 kilometers beneath the seabed, the earthquake struck at 5:37 pm local time ( 8:37 GMT ). Off the coast of Kushiro, a town in the southeast of Hokkaido, was the center. Authorities have not recommended a tsunami or major coastal impact despite the possibility of minor sea level variations. Emergency service are closely monitoring the situation, but so far no injury or structural damage have been reported. People are advised to maintain quiet but remain alert.
