UN assembly elects Germany's ex-foreign minister as next president after Russia demands secret vote
After being elected president ( AP ), Annalena Baerbock addresses the UN general assembly ( AP ).

In a secret ballot request from Russia, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly elected former foreign minister Annalena Baerbock to lead the 193-member universe system. Helga Schmid, a high-ranking German minister, received seven vote as a write-in, and 14 nations abstained. In contrast, Bauerbock received 167 votes, about twice the 88 needed to win. After losing her position as the nation’s international affairs key in the recent election, Germany nominated Schmid for the council presidency. Germany was critical of the selection. When Baerbock made an appearance before the council on May 15 to explain her election, Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s assistant UN ambassador, blasted her, saying:” Ms Baerbock has consistently demonstrated her incompetence, serious bias, and lack of understanding of the fundamental principles of diplomacy. According to Polonsky, she was accused of following an “anti-Russia policy,” which gave Russia reason to doubt that she would be able to act in the interests of harmony and discourse as chairman of the General Assembly. Berbock defused Russia’s ask for a secret vote. She said,” I’m glad that the vast majority of member state have supported my nomination, and I’m looking forward to working with all member states together in these hard times.” At the start of the 80th conference in September, Bauerbock will take the place of former Senegal prime minister Philemon Yang, who is currently president of the assembly. She will rule over the United Nations ‘ annual meeting of world leaders in late September and celebrations anniversaries that took place in 1945. The General Assembly’s one-year president is rotated by location. The legislature, which represents the most representative body of the UN, has taken the lead in its response to the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Because of Russia’s filibuster of any resolutions by the UN Security Council, that is why any resolution has been blocked. In her acceptance speech, Bauer said that the design of her presidency would be” Better Together,” stating that the earth is “walking on a rope of doubt” in extremely difficult times. She said that the United Nations ‘ establishment on the heels of World War II “reminds us that we have previously experienced hard times.” And we must consider these issues seriously. More than 120 armed conflicts are currently occurring around the world as another reminder that the UN’s main goal,” to keep succeeding years from the blight of war,” is still unfulfilled. As the world is confronted by divisions and trust, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Baerback may take the presidency as the universe is also facing” conflicts, climate crisis, hunger, and inequality.” Support and development funding is running out, and our institutions and structures also reflect the world of yesterday, hardly a vision for the future, he said. ” This is a time for us to work together, forge common solutions, and take action to address these issues.”
