Conservative students, told to tame their criticism of Hamas and illegal immigration, file lawsuit

Golden West College was sued for alleged free conversation repercussions.

A California community college has been sued by federal courts, alleging officials told them to temper their accusations of contentious topics like Hamas and illegal immigration and that they violated their free speech rights.

Golden West College, a school owned by the Young America’s Foundation, is a school owned by student activists from Huntington Beach, the lawsuit claims.

If students continue to discuss contentious subjects with peers, according to undergraduate activists Matin Samimiat and Annaliese Hutchings, officials have threatened to discipline them.

At Golden West’s Club Expo in late February, Hutchings and Samimiat, a pupil of Iranian descent, exchanged contentious social views.

A board with the message” CHANGE MY MIND!!!” was displayed at their Editor booth. • Being an American is a pleasure, and we should all get appreciative of it. Any society in the world suffers as a result of improper immigration. • Women’s athletics and spaces don’t relate to men.

Stephanie Smallshaw, the university disciplinary officer, wrote in response that Samimiat had received” My office received some information regarding Club Expo and some communication on a light board at your booth. To allow for discussion, I want to plan a meeting.

They held a conference on March 20 and displayed similar statements on a board at the” Goldchella” school preview day event a week before.

She allegedly threatened them with administrative action during the conference with Smallshaw, alleging that their statements were insulting and could have caused injury and sparked a phone to violence.

Smallshaw allegedly provided no expressly clear instructions on what speech may be appropriate despite Samimiat offering to change the language of the party’s messages without changing their views.

I left Iran to love the incredible flexibility that the United States offers. I’m now being subject to punishment for speaking out politically because those ideas are ones that executives don’t like, Samimiat said in a statement released to The College Fix.

In the issue, Alan Gura, an Institute for Free Speech lawyer representing the pupils, asserts that the school’s punitive policies are vague, overly wide, and biased against liberal viewpoints, which violate the students ‘ First Amendment rights.

Due to Smallshaw’s threats and the continued existence of the Code’s ban on “hateful habits aimed at a particular person or group of people,” the two students alleged, and are not going to try to recruit new students or interact with peers.

According to the article, the students are unsure as to what speech, specifically, may cause them to face problems with Smallshaw or any other College Disciplinary Officer under the Code, as they are unsure of where officials would draw the line regarding what constitutes “hateful,” “inflicting emotional damage,” and what terminology “demeans, degrades, or disgraces, or disgraces any person” in the eyes of an official.

A YAF director claims that the complaint seeks primary and continuous injunctions that would impede the school’s ability to enforce its rules as well as a declaration that the school’s administrative code is constitutional.

The College Fix contacted Golden West College for post, but the institution did not respond.

” College is supposed to get a place where students may exchange ideas. Otherwise, Golden West College instructs students to respect some deeply held political views, and to refrain from expressing them in any way, Hutchings said in a statement released to The College Fix.
