As part of a sensor into corruption allegations at CHP-held towns, Greek police arrested five opposition leaders early on Wednesday along with 17 others, a group official told AFP. A former senator and three Photovoltaic leaders were among the three people detained in Istanbul and two more in Adana, according to the official. The most recent round of arrests, according to him, brings the total amount of CHP leaders in Istanbul territory to nine, including Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the country’s mayor who is the country’s principal political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. With the two detention in Adana, there are now 11 Photovoltaic leaders overall. According to local media, the most recent research came at the weekends when a court issued arrest warrants for 47 municipal authorities in connection with four distinct corruption cases centered in Istanbul. The biggest city protests Turkey has seen in over a century were sparked by Imamoglu’s arrest and jailing on March 19. In later attacks involving alleged corruption at Istanbul City Hall, including Imamoglu’s private secretary and his private security officer, authorities had now detained nearly 70 individuals. Imamoglu has been nominated by the CHP as its candidate for 2028 national elections, but whether he can operate depends on the outcome of numerous trials and investigations.
