Canada cracks down on asylum abuse: Canada’s bill will stem the rising number of international students seeking asylum
A record-breaking rise in hospital claims highlights the struggles of foreign students as a result of Canada’s tightening immigration laws.

The Solid Borders Act, a new act from Canada, aims to improve border security, stop the flow of illegal fentanyl, stop money laundering, and protect the integrity of the immigration system. There are rules that, among others, may stop an increasing number of international students from seeking hospital amid the wide range of provisions. Almost 14, 000 foreign students have submitted asylum applications between January and September 2024, with nearly 2,300 of these applications coming from Indian nationals. The truth is that says made under fake pretenses can lead to imprisonment. The Immigration and Refugee Board ( IRB ) will not be referred to the claim made more than a year after entering Canada ( post June 24, 2020 ), as per the legislation to protect the integrity of the asylum system. Additionally, claims made over land borders from the US to Canada more than fourteen days after will be disqualified. The bill further states that claims will only be decided while the plaintiff is in Canada, that dormant cases will be eliminated, and that voluntary departures may be made easier. However, there will be associates there to assist prone claimants during the proceedings, such as minors. According to Kubeir Kamal, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant (RCIC ),” It is a desperately needed response to stop fraudulent claims and protect public safety,” in a conversation with TOI. Regardless of whether they left Canada or returned, this rule applies to all, including kids and temporary people. To make sure they aren’t deported to unsafe conditions, affected individuals can still apply for a Pre-Removal Risk Assessment ( PRRA ). The rise in hospital requests from foreign students, which reached a record 20, 245 in 2024 and is projected to rise even higher in 2025, is largely attributable to tighter immigration laws, including a significant decline in review permits, restricted labor force enrollment, and minimal pathways to permanent residency. India, Nigeria, Guinea, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the main sources of these states. With a backlog of roughly 275 000 cases and a processing capacity of 80 000 000 claims annually, the immigration agency’s ( IRB ) backlog, which is responsible for processing international students ‘ applications for asylum, issuing orders to stay in Canada. Additionally, the organization will have the authority to revoke, halt, or change immigration documents, and to revoke, halt, or stop accepting new applications or end processing present ones for safety or public health reasons. Immigration Minister Lorena Metlege Diab stated in response to the act that” Canada is taking action to address rising migration forces.” We are strengthening our immigration and asylum systems, strengthening them, and making them more adaptable to new and evolving pressures, along with improving safety at the US-Canada border. It’s important to maintain the security of our program while creating a safer, more tenacious Canada.
