Trump escalates battle with Columbia University, threatens accreditation

The Trump administration has begun a process to try to remove Columbia University from its accreditation after it was determined that the school had failed to adequately protect Israeli students from harassment.

The U.S. Education Department informed the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Columbia’s accreditor, on Wednesday that the class was breaking federal anti-discrimination laws and therefore did not adhere to the agency’s requirements. The state released the findings on May 22.

In a statement, education secretary, Linda McMahon, said that while the Department of Education has an obligation to uphold national anti-discrimination laws, school accreditors have an obligation to ensure part organizations abide by their requirements.

The accreditor’s representative acknowledged receipt of the text that day, but he foregoed further comment.

The risk to Columbia’s approval is a major one. A school’s accreditation determines the majority of federal money, including financial assistance. The accrediting organizations themselves must be recognized by the&nbsp, Education Department, even though it appears that just accreditors have the power to revoke Columbia’s position.

” We have addressed those concerns directly with Middle States,” said Columbia spokesperson Virginia Lam Abrams, a spokesperson for the United States Department of Education, now. ” Columbia is incredibly committed to tackling hatred on our school. We take this matter significantly and are working with the federal government to solve it.

The Trump president’s rape on Columbia was a shocking one as the university, which is based in New York City and is negotiating with national organizations over$ 400 million in canceled grants and contracts, primarily having an impact on health research.

The college has made a number of concessions to the government, including increasing monitoring of Middle Eastern studies and reducing pro-Palestinian protests, but they have thus far found that they have not been sufficient to bring the funding back.

McMahon’s speech threatened the federal money Columbia receives through student financial assistance. The Education Department, according to a press release, requires accreditors to “take appropriate behavior” against institutions like Columbia within a set time frame.

As the administrators of federal student aid, accreditors have an enormous common duty. They determine which organizations are qualified for Pell Grants and Federal Student Loans, McMahon said.

” We anticipate that Columbia’s compliance with approval standards will be fully informed by the payment.”

According to the members of the Stand Columbia Society, a group of university and alumni, who reported last month that the endeavor was “going quite easily,” Columbia was lately being evaluated by the leader of&nbsp, Johns Hopkins University.

” Accreditation was not intended to be social. In reality, one of the things that made accreditation so powerful was how unbiased and obscure quality control hummed in the background, Stand Columbia wrote in a publication last month.

” But for the first time in a hundred decades, that behind equipment is being brought into the political light. From where it will end is a mystery. It is obvious that most people can no longer afford to ignore certifications.

When students staged an encampment next spring calling on their executives to leave the battle, Columbia became the center of campus demonstrations against Israel’s military battle in Gaza and elsewhere. A smaller group of protesters seized control of Hamilton Hall, leading to the school calling in the NYPD and making large detention.

More recently, dozens of students occupied Butler Library in opposition of the arrest of new Columbia grad student Mahmoud Khalil and what they believe to be Columbia’s role in his arrest in early March.

Pro-Palestinian kids and their allies accuse Columbia and the Trump presidency of mingling hatred with criticism of Israel.
