Brazilian coup trial: Bolsonaro admits to finding 'alternative ways' to remain in power - what former President said in court
Former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro ( AP )

Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has admitted at his prosecution in the Supreme Court that he allegedly attended conferences in search of “alternative way” to maintain control after losing in the elections of 2022. However, he has denied role in planning any revolt. Following the swearing-in of recent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he stated,” We studied other options within the constitution,” as reported by the Guardian after two days of questioning. Bolsonaro, a head of the far-right, acknowledged that there were other options open to debate, including the expulsion of civil liberties and the implementation of military forces, but chose not to go through them because” there was no climate for it, no opportunity.” He claimed that the state of battle had even been weighed by his friends. Prior to those meetings, the former chiefs of the air force and infantry had previously stated that they were not involved in Bolsonaro’s plans, but the original navy commander pledged to work with Bolsonaro.

    The test

In February, Bolsonaro and 33 of his supporters were accused of plotting a revolution after losing the 2022 national election. The top prosecutor in Brazil has then started a test for the eight of them, including Bolsonaro. Judges will learn from the other 26 accused in the upcoming month. The event dates back to the 2023 coup attempt by hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters against the President Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva, who was sworn in as president in Brasilia, the Supreme Court, and Congress. According to AP, Bolsonaro may spend up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of reportedly staging a revolution. Lt. was the first to give evidence. The trial’s foundation is Colonel Mauro Cid, who entered a plea agreement and who testified against him alongside national police information. He testified that the former leader had planned some “fraud” with the electronic voting system and had edited a draft decree that included several officials ‘ arrests.

What if Bolsonaro is found criminal?

Bolsonaro would be able to file an appeal with the Supreme Court’s entire panel yet if he is found guilty. Brazil’s best attorney may face the same fate if the former leader is found not guilty of all charges. In addition, Bolsonaro’s attorneys may wish to lengthen the test by requesting explanations on the decisions of various judges. By the second half of the month, legal experts predict that this approach will be over.
