Brandon Gill, a Republican representative from Texas’s 26th congressional district, faced backlash on social media on Monday for criticising mass migration, with users quick to point out his wife’s Indian origin. The Republican representative posted images on X comparing California in the 1960s to the present. He wrote: “California in 1960 vs California today. Mass migration has made America unrecognisable.” The first image showed a 1960s beach scene with sunbathers, while another depicted a moment from the LA riots, featuring a man waving a Mexican flag amid the flames.Gill was soon bombarded with many users reminding him that his wife was an immigrant too. Gill married conservative author Danielle D’Souza in 2017, who was born in Mumbai. One user wrote: “Remind me, who are you married to!?” while another pointed out: “You married a second-generation immigrant.”In March too, Gill had sparked controversy by describing a volleyball tournament attended by members of the Leuva Patidar Samaj as an example of “importing foreign class allegiances.” He wrote: “America is the ‘land of opportunity’ precisely because we don’t have a caste system. We cannot sustain America’s prosperity and liberty by importing foreign class allegiances. Immigration without assimilation is national and cultural suicide.”
