On Wednesday, a powerful earthquake with a scale of 5.9 struck pieces of Taiwan. The earthquake was recorded at 11:00:28 ( UTC ) by the US Geological Survey ( USGS). The epicenter of the quake was about 71 kilometers ( 44.1 miles ) south of Hualien City, at a depth of 31.1 kilometers ( 19.3 miles ), and its location was at 23.330°N latitude and 121.621°E longitude. In contrast to the highly occupied eastern part of Taiwan, which is home to about 23 million people and usually experiences tectonic activity, the sparsely populated town on Taiwan’s northeast coast is lightly populated. Taipei, the money, experienced a brief moment of shaking. There were no instant accounts of significant harm, though. Taiwan is located along the Pacific” Ring of Fire,” a place of geological faults that span Chile to New Zealand. This area is extremely prone to earthquakes. The worst disaster to hit Taiwan occurred in 1999, with a scale of 7.7. 2,415 people were killed, damaged, and violated building regulations, had quicker response times and cooperation, and launched extensive public education campaigns on disaster protection. Colleges and places of employment routinely hold disaster training, and phones are constantly triggered with notifications whenever a powerful earthquake is detected.
