How to Train Your Dragon actor, Gerard Butler on how Saudi Arabia is opening up to the world
As part of his world tour, Gerald Butler attended the How to Train Your Dragon debut on June 12, 2025, in Riyadh.

Just a few years back, there was no legal or open theater in Saudi Arabia. Strong forth to 2025, and Gerard Butler is greeting fans in Riyadh, greeting followers, and watching animated creatures soaring across the Kingdom Tower. The Scottish artist, who is best known for 300 and Olympus Has Fallen, was in Saudi Arabia for the local launch of the How to Teach Your Dragon series, which was set to debut in UAE theaters on June 12, 2025. However, this wasn’t just another quit on a global media journey. In an exclusive movie meeting with Gulf News, Butler stated,” I’ve often wanted to come to Saudi Arabia. It had always been this kind of mysterious and mystical area, as you know, and then I believe it is being made available to the world.

    A Kingdom in Transition

Saudi Arabia lifted its 35-year film restrictions in 2018; What was once a film-free area has since grown fast into a significant player in world pleasure. The change is a component of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman‘s vision 2030, a regional reform plan that aims to diversify the nation’s economy and reshape its social identity. While filming Kandahar, his 2023 actions drama, in the sand valleys of AlUla, Butler had now witnessed this change. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on Kandahar. I adored AlUla. He claimed that it was “probably my favorite spot that I filmed on.” However, it wasn’t just the setting that made a person feel. He continued,” I really found the people so very warm and welcoming.” Additionally, there were a number of younger, skilled filmmakers who were also on the set, these younger students. Its opening up to the world is fantastic, in my opinion.

A Country Falling in Love with the Big Screen

Before 2018, Saudi moviegoers had to leave the country to see a movie. The stomach is then growing quickly and quickly. Celebrities like Butler are taking notice because the theaters are packed, the premieres are taking shape city-wide events. He said,” I love that people here are really into movies.” It’s “new, it’s new, and it’s exciting.” I sort of hope there were more of those around the rest of the world, because that’s how it ought to be. You can’t overcome seeing a movie with a large audience on the big screen. How to Teach Your Dragon’s Riyadh debut, which took place at Roshn Front Cinemas, was a scene. Viewers crowded the dark carpet. animated dragon adorned the Kingdom Tower. It was a speech for a nation that had no theaters a long time ago.

Stoick the Role and the Vast

Stoick the Vast, a towering Viking chieftain and parents find voiced by Butler, is at the center of the How to Train Your Dragon line. He has played this role for more than ten years, and he feels a personal connection to it. Stoick embodies a lot of my temperament, he said. ” I believe my hair perhaps represented the portion of me that wasn’t in Stoick.” But perhaps not so much me, as, in my opinion, the beard is what made him more like a grandfather. You know, sort of extended his education. Butler doesn’t consider Stoick to be just a cartoon character. Even when he enters the mask for voice job, something is altered. He said,” When I put on that mask, I became the chief of Berk.” It was difficult due to the size of the visor, the costume’s weight, and its size. However, you needed that energy to meet into it. And that influence that I acquired to comprehend, enjoy, and experience. Butler thinks that Stoick possesses a unique combination of strength and risk. He said,” It felt great to be able to enjoy a character that is so great and bombastic, but also to allow individuals into his soul, mind, grief, and joy.” ” And however, keep the largeness, the sillyness, the fear, the fishiness.” He’s strong. He is strong. But I made an effort to incorporate as many colors as I was. I always wanted a generic animated take to appear.

    Why Does Dragon Resonate?

Supporters of How to Train Your Dragon range from children to adults, and for a purpose it has lasted this long. It speaks to a deeper issue. We’re possibly a distinct era, Butler said. However, when I was younger, I thought there were some really deep, intense films that dealt with quite contentious subjects. And next, I believe, it kind of vanished. However, he said,” I think it’s certainly coming back.” Dragon adheres to those styles. ” I believe that’s what makes How to Train Your Dragon so unique and mature. According to what we say, it works for eight to eighty. because I believe it possesses the complexity of some of those truly fascinating elements. You can also let go, be enthralled, and taken in by the beauty and enjoyment of the trip.
