EU chief pushes for diplomatic solution to Israel-Iran crisis in call with Netanyahu

In a phone dialogue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a diplomatic solution to address Iran’s nuclear threat while supporting Israel’s right to self-defense. Von der Leyen stressed at a G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, that a negotiated solution would be” the best solution” for the long run. She stated,” We are deeply concerned about the Middle East’s advancements,” underscoring the EU’s commitment to balance, harmony, and political de-escalation. The Union leader echoed Netanyahu’s assertion that” Iran should not have a nuclear weapons, without any problem,” as she stated in a blog on X. She acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself against aggression while citing Iran as the main cause of local volatility. The UN nuclear watchdog’s recent findings indicate Iran’s non-compliance with its nuclear duty, and Van der Leyen’s remarks come in response. Iran then announced its intentions to raise its production of enriched uranium, despite the claim that it would not reach the weapons-grade levels it had. She compared Iran’s actions in the Middle East to its help for Russia in the Ukraine conflict during the G7 media briefing, noting that Iranian-made weapons were “indiscriminately hitting locations not only in Israel but also in Ukraine.” Von der Leyen also spoke about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling the situation “unacceptable. She claimed that Netanyahu had pledged to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to the area devastated by the war. At the G7 summit, the EU Commission President, who has previously criticized Israel’s military presence in Gaza, stressed the need to examine the Iran problems and Ukraine’s position, underscoring the interdependence of these local issues and their impact on international protection.
