According to the University of North Carolina System Policy on Equality, which specifies commitments to institutional independence, free speech, academic freedom, equality, and participation, Western Carolina University is closing its “diversity, capital, and addition” business.
Following a viral video released this month, which claimed an executive claimed school officials incorporated DEI into college programs despite a systemwide restrictions on the ideology, the Office of Intercultural Affairs decided to close it. Additionally, a federal investigation into the university’s reported Title IX breach involving a man using the women’s bathrooms is continuous.
According to ABC 13 News, Chancellor Kelli Brown made the announcement in a text to employees and faculty on Friday.
I have made the decision to close the Office of Intercultural Affairs ( ICA ) after reviewing WCU’s student support functions. All of the money raised for ICA will go toward pursuing school priorities that help UNC performance metrics, according to Brown.
She added that the institution is “restructuring… student support services to better coincide with the UNC System Policy on Equality.”
According to a 2020 media release from the class, the company was established in 2010 as” a party of variety, participation, and expression.”
The Office of Multicultural Affairs and WCU’s Women’s Center merged to form ICA, with the goal of creating a school setting where students from all walks of life you feel valued, respected, and appreciated, according to the launch.
It also lists some of the events the company has hosted, including” Pride Week for the LBGTQ society, Martin Luther King Jr.commemorations in honor of the murdered civil rights head,” Project Care initiatives to improve student retention and academic achievement, Native American Heritage Month, and Black History Month.
The school correct recently reported that the school was recently featured in a subtle video released by a liberal activist group that claimed DEI initiatives continue to be in campus programs despite the system’s ban.
Karen Price, WCU’s director of institutional assessment, says in the nearly five-minute edited video that” we’re trying to embed that kind of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness across every area… it shouldn’t just be an office or a figurehead.” Price is no longer a faculty member at the university.
The DEI office’s closure comes as part of a federal agency’s investigation into alleged violations of revised Title IX laws.
After student Payton McNabb posted a video online confronting the man, The Fix reported that the school is accused of allowing a trans-identical man to use a women’s restroom on campus.
