On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had be” careful” when making additional comments on the Hardeep Singh Nijjar situation. His remarks were made while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Canada for the G7 Summit, where both leaders held diplomatic discussions. When asked whether the Nijjar situation had been discussed with Prime Minister Modi, Carney responded that” we discussed the need for a law enforcement dialogue, no just dialogue, cooperation directly, and the need to address transnational repression.” Since 2023, when then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed his state had” reliable allegations” linking Indian officials to the shooting of Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, tensions have been higher. On June 18, 2023, Nijjar, a terrorist identified by the National Investigation Agency ( NIA ), was shot dead outside a gurdwara. India and Canada both vigorously refute the complaints, calling them “absurd” and “motivated,” and accusing them of allowing anti-India activities to develop unchallenged. Six diplomats were called back by India after Canada declared them to be “persons of interest” in the Nijjar research. India lodged a formal rally, accusing Canada of violating the Vienna Convention by enforcing its own terms. Both nations have now agreed to restore complete consular services. Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney both stressed the importance of India-Canada relations, which are based on mutual admiration, the rule of law, and a dedication to territorial integrity and sovereignty.
