Activists protest emigration regulations outside the Arizona Senate on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
Democrats walked out of a ballot on Wednesday at the express capitol to rally the most recent immigration legislation passing the Arizona Senate.  ,
The passage of House Bills 2748 and 2821 may give local and state officers the authority to enact immigration rules and make it illegal for them to cross the southwestern border. The legislation is almost identical to a measure passed by the Democratic Governor. Earlier this month, Katie Hobbs vetoed.  ,
To meet the protest with Latino lobbying groups that had gathered outside the state Senate, three Democratic lawmakers boycotted a council voting on the payments. Sens. Rosanna Gabaldón ( D- Green Valley ) and Flavio Bravo ( D- Phoenix ) said there was no need to debate the bills again after Hobbs ‘ veto.
” We now know the outcome”, Bravo said. And not just that it did grant a filibuster, but also that it may compel additional litigation, and that the budget deficit is currently present. We do n’t need lawsuits from the Department of Justice for unconstitutional proposals” . ,
The steps were compared to SB 1070, the contentious laws passed by the Legislature over a decade ago, by campaigners like Karina Ruiz, the executive director of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition. The provisions of SB 1070 that gave local law enforcement the authority to enforce national immigration laws were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Karina Ruiz, executive director of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, is encouraged by the president’s proposal to expand Pell grants to DACA recipients, but does n’t think it goes far enough.
” We’re here for immigrants. We’re around for people that are oppressed, that are marginalized”, Ruiz said. ” And we want those people in the state Capitol to hear us loud and clear: We wo n’t take it anymore”.
Rep. Joseph Chaplik ( R- Scottsdale ) sponsored one of the bills. He argued that action is required to combat problems like human trafficking and fentanyl trafficking.  ,
” Why do we have the bill around? Suddenly, the Biden presidency has neglected our border”, Chaplik said. ” Usually, there’s a single cause for when people present bills. There’s approximately 12 million causes here”.
Chaplik cited Laken Riley’s death as one of several high-profile offences allegedly committed by illegal immigrants.
Liberals and activists who oppose the legislation claimed that the federal government is in charge of developing and enforcing immigration laws. Additionally, they claimed that the existing slate of Republican proposals is politically motivated and intended to bolster a new U.S. Supreme Court decision that allowed a comparable Texas law to briefly enter effect before a new appeals court paused the policy while awaiting legal challenges.  ,
” These strikes on the immigrant community have to stop”, Ruiz said. Alternatively of constantly trying to attack us, they must find answers to immigration.
Gabaldón argued that detailed immigration reform must be pursued by governmental authorities.  ,
