Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Friday that the Department of Homeland Security would extend the immigration protections for Burmese citizens. From May 26 through November 25, 2025, the Temporary Protected Status for Myanmar may be extended for 18 months.

Although the nation transitioned to politics in 2011, military leaders loosened their hold in response to new elections that saw the opposition party, National League for Democracy, win over 50 % of the vote.
