As part of the state’s New Arrivals Mission, where illegal immigrants who have been taken from the Texas-Mexico borders are granted asylum in Chicago’s sanctuary capital, five parks serve as temporary housing units. Beginning on Saturday, work may be made to remove refugees from five shelters so that residents can begin using the Park District’s facilities, which are well-known for summer camps and sports.
We are appreciative of the alderpersons and communities who have welcomed new companions with empty hands, and we are pleased that these area features will be restored to their original use just in time for summer programming, Johnson said in a statement.
The five homes are holding about 800 newcomers combined, the Associated Press reported. City officials did travel them to other local homes, while the five features prepare for reopening, Johnson said.

Although Chicago has invested$ 300 million in shelters for asylum seekers, Johnson has just been accused of being unconcerned about where all of the money is going. Gov. Greg Abbott ( R- TX ) has bused 34, 000 illegal immigrants to the city, with some shelters receiving as much as$ 344, 000 a week, which taxpayers have funded.
Johnson predicted that the features would reopen “in the coming weeks.” At the beginning of 2024, 14, 717 newcomers were living in 27 homes across the area, but as of Monday, 10, 555 are being housed in 23 homes, according to CBS Chicago.
