Beginning on Monday, a new legislation is expected to go into effect that will increase pay for a previously low-paying career while threatening to raise wages in a state known for its high cost of living.
Progressives in the state legislature approved the bill next month partly as a recognition that many of the more than 500, 000 workers in fast food restaurants are people working for their families rather than youth, making some money off of them.
That includes newcomers like Ingrid Vilorio, who claimed she first started working at a McDonald’s shortly after moving to the United States in 2019. Up until last year, Fast Food was her full-time work. She currently works at a Jack in the Box for about eight hours a week in addition to her additional responsibilities.
