At one of its buildings, North Carolina State University in Raleigh is looking into the exposure of students and alumni to high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs ), a substance that can cause cancer. Over 150 tumor cases have been reported by people who attended classes at one of the school’s properties.
According to WRAL News, people connected to North Carolina State University’s Poe Hall had documented 152 cancer situations. Just one fortnight after PCB levels found inside the campus building that were 38 times higher than the environmental protection agency standards were formally declared closed, the building was actually shut down in November.
North Carolina State student Christie Lewis revealed to Fox News that she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer while a student at the university in 2011 or 2012. Lewis revealed to Fox News that she was also given angiosarcoma only weeks after being given the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
Lewis first did not associate her cancer treatment with her college’s possible exposure to PCBs, but she started to doubt this relationship after WRAL reported that the number of North Carolina State students diagnosed with cancer was three times higher than the average amount of cancer cases in Wake County, North Carolina.
Because I did n’t know anyone else, I could never have made that connection alone. Lewis said,” I was the only person in my small group of colleagues who had cancer while I was in academy.” And I initially believed there was a problem with my brain. That meant everything was amiss with me. I have four sisters, and everybody’s so wholesome except for me”.

Lewis recalled that she began to wonder if her body was n’t the cause of the high rates of cancer cases she had after learning about the possible link between Poe Hall exposure and higher levels of cancer. Perhaps I was really exposed to something that caused this.
According to Fox News, Poe Hall was constructed in 1971, a time when Boards were also frequently employed in building elements.
While 152 cancer cases have been reported by people connected to Poe Hall, according to WRAL News, the outlet noted that none of the circumstances have been formally connected to Poe Hall and that no recognized organization has ever defined the reports as” clusters” in light of the National Cancer Institute’s concept.
The first draft of North Carolina State University’s” Indoor Environmental Investigation Report”  , according to Fox News, was released online after health officials took Poe Hall samples in October.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services stated in a statement to Fox News that “NC State has taken steps to protect the public’s wellbeing, including closing Poe Hall and consulting with an outside economic analyst to establish restoration of the creating.”
