In fact, Chalkbeat found that the city’s public schools have struggled in recent years with the opposite problem: too many empty seats.
Although enrollment has increased slightly this school year due to an influx of migrant students, enrollment is still about 9 % below pre-pandemic levels. Lower enrollment can result in smaller budgets, mergers, and closures, according to officials from the education department’s top priority.
In an interview with the Right Side Broadcasting Network on March 4, Trump claimed without evidence that” we have children that are no longer going to school” because of the influx of migrants.
He asserted,” I’m not blaming them.” I’m claiming that they take our students ‘ places in New York City in place of our students. We have these wonderful students who are going to school — all of a sudden they no longer have a seat”.

The New York Immigration Coalition’s director of economic justice and family empowerment, Liza Schwartzwald, said,” The idea that we somehow do n’t have space or that children are being removed from schools is just completely unfounded.”

New York Mayor Eric Adams has sent varying messages regarding the influx of migrants for his part. He claimed last year that the influx of migrants would “destroy” the city, which sparked outrage from immigrant organizations, and that they were to blame for the city’s services being cut. But he also celebrated the uptick in public school enrollment, fueled in part by new arrivals.
Some advocates, including Schwartzwald, draw parallels between Trump and Adams ‘ rhetoric and worry about the conditions that it creates for asylum seekers, some of whom have had repercussions in schools. For instance, some students at Newcomers High School have requested a change of name in part because they worry that the phrase “puts a target on us” will be used against us.
” When Mayor Adams uses rhetoric where he — just like Trump — tries to create an’ us’ and a’ them’ — what he’s saying is not all immigrants are New Yorkers”, Schwartzwald said. Anyone who moves to New York to start a life is a New Yorker, as far as we’re concerned.
