In a significant move towards inclusivity, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services ( USCIS ) has announced the introduction of a third gender option,” X”, on the Form N- 400, Application for Naturalization. This revision, effective starting on April 1, 2024, marks a significant step in accommodating people who identify other than the traditional binary genders of” Male ( M)” and” Female ( F).”
Candidates filing the 04/01/24 version of Form N- 400 or those with pending software filed before April 1, 2024, now have the option to select” X” as their gender identity. This release reflects USCIS’s responsibility to creating a more welcoming environment for immigrants.
Individuals who want to change the gender selection on a pending Form N-400 to” X” can do so by writing a letter outlining their request, either in response to a Request for Evidence ( RFE ) or during an interview. For those with net accounts, the text can be uploaded as new information to the pending program. Additionally, applicants without on-line accounts can e-mail USCIS at USCIS- [email protected]. governor to obtain the alter.
To find out if you have the X female option, USCIS has provided the following chart.

You previously received your registration document | You may wait until USCIS revises Form N- 565 Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document to put the X female option. Up until the form is updated, you may continue to submit the Form N-565 in accordance with the form instructions. When USCIS updates Form N-565, the revised variety will allow for a second female when requesting a replacement certificate. |
The single USCIS form now allowing the X gender is Form N-400, which is important to note. Citizenship certificates remain the only safe identity document issued by USCIS that includes the gender X until further type revisions are completed, ensuring consistency and inclusivity across all benefit requests.
This plan update is in line with USCIS’s efforts to maintain strong identity verification and fraud prevention measures while removing obstacles and reducing unnecessary costs associated with obtaining immigration benefits.
By allowing personal- collection of gender without requiring supporting documentation, except for Form N- 565 which awaits official revision, USCIS aims to create a more equal and visible immigration system, the immigration agency said in a statement.
