Now, I ca n’t help but ask a question that’s been on my mind since we began this conversation,” Did you watch the movie Barbie”?
” I watched it, yeah”. Much wait.
“And?”
” My brothers absolutely detested it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two kids. I want’ em to feel powerful too]while ] respecting women. Pop culture tries to empower women without denying them the opportunity to be men, as well as to protect and deliver. I think it’s important to give women the confidence that we can accomplish anything without losing our sexuality or our essence. I believe that both men and women have a function in society and that both have a purpose. We complement one another, and that enhance ought to be preserved.
” Just because a woman can do it all does n’t mean she should”?
” Why not distribute the load with those who deserve it and are obligated to carry it as well”?
On a more practical level, if Shakira did n’t buy into the power dynamic of her culture, she certainly would n’t be beholden to its beauty ideals. ” Of course, I’d set on my makeup and straighten my hair often. I frequently used that natural sensuality on stage as a way to express myself because it felt hot. However, I believe that I have different skills in place of only beauty.
This formed part of what was termed the’ Shakira Paradox’ in the meeting —a conviction in women’s right to authority, firm, and expression, without dismissing the standard expectations placed on men.
The Barbie drama, which debuted in theaters in 2023, caused quite the storm of emotions next summer. Some individuals and organizations expressed resentment toward the film because it” contributes to the marginalization of gentlemen.”
The show’s “woke” communication, which was directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, was at the center of controversy because it explored a matriarchal society within Barbieland, where people hold positions of power and people, known as Kens, are depicted as having much value beyond what Barbies give them. Critics labeled it as “anti-male” and propaganda because it explored a matriarchal society within Barbieland.
