Border Patrol sees rare decline in March crossings at southern border

In contrast to previous years, the number of refugees crossing from Mexico in March was unusually quiet, according to Border Patrol agents on the southern border, which supports the summer wave that was brought on by a spring decline in traveling.

Border officials apprehended 137, 000 workers at the 2, 000- hour southeastern borders in March, according to national data obtained by CBS News. The figure was down slightly from 141, 000 detention in February, though however far above the average of 30, 000 to 50, 000 regular arrests seen in the generation before President Joe Biden’s career.

One of two circumstances in more than 20 years when the number of arrests decreased as the climate warmed up was the decrease in the number of Border Patrol arrests at the U.S. Mexico frontier in March.

The only other year was in 2020, when the coronavirus epidemic was raging in the world.

Deterrence by the United States, state of Texas, and Hispanic federal may all be factors for the collapse.

Three Trump administration leaders who spoke with CBS News made the suggestion that Mexico had increased immigration enforcement since December when the White House sent best officials to Mexico City for diplomatic discussions.

One Biden national said,” That kind of features that one of the factors for the lower was the state of Mexico’s continued significant police efforts to destroy some of the vehicles networks moving people up to the border.”

Texas has continued its extensive border security program known as Operation Lone Star stateside. Gov. In response to the rise in illegal immigrant arrests and Border Patrol agents being positioned inside the facility rather than remain out on the ground, Greg Abbott (R-TX ) spearheaded the initiative in early 2021.

In December 2023, Border Patrol agents arrested almost 250, 000 illegal immigrants at the southern borders, the highest monthly total in history.

Federal data has been available for three centuries after Operation Lone Star was launched, revealing that workers are increasingly choosing to travel to New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

    U. S. Customs and Border Protection, the federal agency that oversees the Border Patrol, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the March borders numbers.

CBP does n’t make monthly data public until halfway through the month.
