Dem Rep. Robert Garcia: Thinking of Immigration as a Security Issue Means We Can’t See It as Economic Necessity

On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s” The Last Word”, Rep. Robert Garcia ( D- CA ) said that because we’ve lumped immigration in with border security, we ca n’t think of immigration as an economic necessity because it’s viewed as a security issue.

Guest Ali Velshi said,” Congressman, I’m always — I’m worried about, in this country, we have, inadvertently or then, decided to treat immigration as a security threat, as opposed to an economic issue. We’ve done this — multiculturalism falls under the Department of Homeland Security, which I’ve often thought, I understand why it was done after 9/11, but it feels like it was truly a mistake. The majority of other nations regard immigration as a necessary financial critical, while others view security at their borders as a distinct issue. We’ve combined the two, and now it’s difficult for Americans to see it as an economical essential because they see it as a security issue.

Garcia responded,” That’s correctly. Second, immigration is a gross good in this state. It always has been. Newcomers, as we know what — look at the market, immigrants contribute so much to our national sector, to our local markets in all of our state across the country. Immigrants are getting educated, going back, you have people that are completing graduate degrees, people from other countries that are here contributing, everything from people that are going to college, to the people that are out there, paving our cement, our roadways, our highways, our bridges, there are so]many ] contributions. We know that the only way our economy can work is with immigrants, and oftentimes, it’s immigrant labor that many other folks do n’t want to do. And so, this notion that we’re going to miraculously shut off emigration, that we’re going to go back on our beliefs is bad. And Donald Trump is the one who is speaking this out. And he has persuaded a lot of Republicans that previously had a little bit more value for refugees and a little bit more comprehension of the efforts. This is not the party of Ronald Reagan, of George Bush, of so many others that at least understood those achievements. He has a twisted truth, his speech is prejudiced against refugees, his speech is racist, and he needs and his promotion, need to be stopped”.
