A visiting McGill University academic wants an” Interpol-like company” to check the computer and the government’s registration of journalists, all in the name of “misinformation control.”
According to Real North, during a new lesson Raphaël Melançon said Canada’s Bill C- 18, aka the” Online News Act”, can only have a “limited effect” on mis/disinformation.
There are things we can do in our country under our jurisdiction, but there are also lies coming from abroad, and our laws do not apply to what occurs outside of our borders, Melançon ( pictured ) said. ” Liberal democracies]need ] to ensure the same regulations are applied elsewhere”.
Countries can make an international body whose task would be to ensure that information on” the internet and social media is accurate,” according to Melançon, a consultant and journalist who has worked for the Quebec and American provincial governments.
Melançon even recommended the “professionalization” of news by requiring licenses for those in the job.
” At the moment in Canada people may believe to be a journalist”, he said. Members of the press have no obligation to report or read in the media to this day.

Melançon continued by recommending that precise news gathering outlets be prohibited at government events.
” That to me is a concern. If so-called journalists from political media outlets like the far-right Rebel News and the Falon Gong-controlled Epoch Times be permitted to cover government PR press conferences, or should they be treated like activists and treated like that? he said.
According to Melançon, “past actions” and educational background should be taken into account when a proposed method of journalist licensing is to be implemented.

According to the event description, the talk zeroed in on “how the advent of the Internet and social media has, in the past two decades, contributed to amplifying cultural tensions, polarizing people opinion, and radicalizing social discourse in Canada”, and how events like COVID, BLM, and Freedom Convoy protests “played an active role in the growing popularity of far- right (‘ alt- right’ ) and significantly- left (‘ woke’ ) movements”.
