Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX ) from Texas, a Republican from Texas, suggested that black Americans should be exempt from paying taxes as a form of reparations before claiming that it might not work because of the fact that black people are” not paying taxes in the first place.”
Crockett, who recently made headlines for perpetuating the debunked myth that U. S. frontier police officers “whipped” Creole workers, was giving an interview on” The Black Lawyers Podcast” when she brought up the idea.
” I do n’t remember which celebrity, but it was actually a celebrity”, the progressive congresswoman recalled to host Jehan” J” Carter of the proposal she saw — apparently from an unnamed famous person.
” And I was like,’ I do n’t know if that’s not necessarily a bad idea ‘…One of the things that they proposed is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time”, Crockett continued.

She continued, adding that the plan might be beneficial because it “puts money back into your wallet,” but that it might not work” for people who are currently, say, struggling and never paying taxes in the first place.”
Crockett advocated the idea that compensation should be made in some way because” but some dark folk — not only do you owe you for the work that was stolen and killed and all the other things— but the fact is, like, we end up being so far behind.”
The congresswoman even stated that the federal and state governments need to have persistence with reparations plans because without engagement, “everybody’s freaking run to whichever state and become like,’ Yo, I need mine.'”
” And so we do n’t want to see that — this is definitely something that needs to be thought through”, she said.
Crockett went on to criticize “people that are n’t even willing to do the]reparations ] studies, are n’t willing to invest to make sure we can roll this out the right way”.
Her remarks come as the Tennessee state government votes on a bill to outlaw “local governments from exppending money for the uses of studying or disbursing compensation” on Wednesday.
The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Brent Taylor ( R ), was introduced after the commissioners of Shelby County voted , to launch a “feasibility study to examine reparations for the descendants of slaves”, the Daily Mail reported.
Taylor, whose district is within Shelby County, says his reasoning for going against the$ 5 million study is not a” judgment” on reparations as a concept.
” I will produce very distinct, our vote currently does not pass judgment on restitution”, Taylor said on the State Senate ground:
Although it is a very significant and significant issue for many people in our nation, it belongs to the federal government and does not belong to our cities and counties, so I do n’t think it’s appropriate for our cities and counties to spend tax dollars on such a subject.
The bill was referred to as” white supremacist legislation” by progressive state representative Justin J. Pearson ( D) and was publicly supported by Memphis preacher Rev. Earle Fisher to get the invoice tossed out of the government.  ,
Please support our efforts to stop the study of compensation in Tennessee’s federal government. takes 30 minute to join us in protesting the love of @tnhousegop on such a tragic and terrible moment in our history. https ://t.co/6ybSGmPKbF

In the past, Crockett has backed Pearson against the so-called” light Republican establishment,” following his momentary expulsion from the Tennessee government for breaking decorum laws during an anti-gun demonstration on the House ground.
