Trump Calls For Cutting NPR Funds After Editor Accuses Network Of Bias

After a long-standing NPR editor claimed the network lacked funding, former president Donald Trump, who is now running for president, demanded this week that funding be cut from National Public Radio ( NPR ).

“NO MORE Cash FOR Radio, A TOTAL SCAM! EDITOR SAID THEY HAVE NO Republican, AND IS ONLY USED TO ‘DAMAGE TRUMP. ’ THEY ARE A LIBERAL Propaganda MACHINE. NOT ONE Dollars! ! ! ” Trump said in a blog to Truth Social on Wednesday.

The Free Press published an  Uri Berliner, NPR’s mature company editor, claimed in an op-ed on Tuesday that NPR “lost America’s trust” as a result of its extremely liberal bent. Despite his critique, Berliner said “defunding ” was not the way to address the “missteps ” he outlined.

There is still a need for a common organisation where stories are told and beliefs exchanged in good faith as the nation becomes more damaged. Defunding, as a rebuke from Congress, had n’t change the news at NPR. That needs to travel from within, ” he said.

Trump has suggested reducing open media money numerous times during his presidency, but Congress refused to do so. If he is re-elected this time, that could alter. The former leader is “tightening his grip on the parliamentary GOP’s policy objective, ” according to a POLITICO report after the House blocked the passage of a FISA act that Trump opposed. ”

When NPR removed Twitter ( now X ) from its network last year after it received fake IDs linking it to the U.S. S. government, the network insisted it “receives less than 1 percent of its$ 300 million annual budget from the federally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting. ” However, on its site, NPR says federal funding is “essential” and that ending it “would result in fewer plans, less media — especially local journalism—and eventually the loss of public television channels, especially in rural and financially distressed communities. ”

In his op-ed ,  When Trump defeated Hillary Clinton to win the 2016 presidential election, Bernliner cited the “rise of campaigning taking off.”

“As in numerous publications, his election in 2016 was greeted at NPR with a mixture of amazement, anger, and sadness. ( Just to point out, I eagerly voted against Trump twice but felt like we were required to defend him fairly ), ” Berliner said. “ But what began as hard, straightforward policy of a angry, truth-impaired leader veered toward attempts to damage or destroy Trump’s president. ”

Browner went over how NPR interviewed Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA ) dozens of times, during which he often spoke about there being evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia, but the network offered up “notably sparse” coverage when Robert Mueller’s special counsel report released in 2019 found “no credible evidence of collusion ” and let Russiagate “fade” from its programming.

It is one thing to jump and skip on a significant story. However, it happens, ” Berliner said. You follow the wrong prospects, you get misled by solutions you trusted, you’re psychologically invested in a tale, and fragments of circumstantial evidence not add up. It’s terrible to blow a great story. ”

The writer shared an tale about the Hunter Biden laptop narrative, which emerged prior to the 2020 election, saying it was “newsworthy. However, the enduring literary urge to follow a warm tale lead was being stifled. I listened as one of NPR’s best and most fair-minded journalists said it was good we were n’t following the laptop story because it might help Trump during a meeting with colleagues. ”

Additionally, Berginer added that he discovered no Republicans or 87 listed Democrats serving as editors in D. C. , where NPR is headquartered, but when he shared the information in a team meeting and suggested it was a diversification problem, “the reply was n’t angry. It was worse. It was met with profound indifference. ”

Edith Chapin, the leader of the leadership team, and other members of NPR’s editor-in-chief, said in a statement that they” strongly disagree with Uri’s assessment of the quality of our journalism and the integrity of our newsroom processes.” We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work our desks and shows do, citing a variety of challenging stories, she added. ”
