The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence claims that “arms are often successfully used in self-defense.”
VERDICT: False. According to research conducted by Florida State University researcher Gary Kleck, at least 760, 000 weapons are used to protect life and property at least 760, 000 days a year.
The Brady Campaign’s website reveals that the organization is targeting concealed have, claiming that using guns in community merely “heightens tensions and exacerbates clashes.”
It dismisses” concealed carry” as providing an street for protection for Americans, claiming,” Firearms are often used successfully in , personal- defense”.
The Brady Campaign’s claim runs completely counter to the academic work of Kleck, who introduced his findings to the public in the 1990s, demonstrating a minimum of 760, 000 defensive gun uses ( DGUs ) a year.
On February 19, 2015, Kleck stated that his conclusions had not been refuted by empirical data, but that a minimum of 760, 000 DGUs per year was also feasible.
Ironically, Kleck’s minimum annual DGU figure of 760, 000 is much lower than figures published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ), which estimated upwards of 2.5 million DGUs a year.
But, Breitbart News reported on December 15, 2022, that the CDC reportedly removed the DGU information from its website after being pressured by gun control activists to do so.
The Brady Campaign’s claim that” we often use efficiently in self-defense” is false is true, regardless of whether one looks at Kleck’s academic work or the DGU information that was removed from the CDC website.
