Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer ( MI ) ducked and danced during the Gaza portion of their interview on NBC’s Meet the Press to avoid responding to any of the politically charged inquiries, including whether she agrees with some that the situation in Gaza is a “genocide.”
Watch Whitmer dancing around the Gaza issue and whether she thinks Biden’s involvement in the conflict in Gaza does cost him the presidency, as reported on NBC’s Meet the Press on April 14th, 2024:
KRISTEN WELKER: This speak about what is happening in the Middle East. About 60 % of Michigan voters disapprove of President Biden’s handling of the Gaza war. Your position, obviously, has the largest Arab-American population in the country. Less than 20 % of Arab Americans say they did cast ballots to re-elect President Biden. Do you believe that President Biden’s involvement in the Middle East conflict may have a bearing on his state of Michigan?
GREENCHEN WHITMER: I believe that regardless of what circumstances, the state of Michigan will always be a close contest. However, I’ve had conversations with people both in my Israeli area and in my Arab-American, Muslim, and Arab areas, and I’ve heard that many people are currently suffering. Many people are at least one degree from a loved one who lost their lives, whether it was on October 7 or the Gaza battle. And so I’m trying to maintain an open dialogue about how we support these stunning, various areas around in Michigan. I’m hoping for peace, but naturally after the events of the past 24 hours, there is much to be learning here.
WELKER: Some Liberals, including from your position, are calling the conflict in Gaza a holocaust. Would you go that way? Do you think that the events in Gaza constitute a murder?
WHITMER: I think that it’s heartbreaking to see the decline of so many innocent life, children every day that this conflict continues to be prosecuted and that’s why as governor, as Commander-in-Chief of the Michigan National Guard, I’m watching this carefully and doing everything in my power to help all of these communities around in Michigan.
WELKER: But you do n’t go that far to use that term genocide?
I wo n’t go in because I am aware that many of these terms are used to divide and enrage us. I’m going to continue to work toward being successful and wishing for peace soon.
The Gaza questions are not unfounded, given both the abundance of correspondents parachuting into Dearborn and reporting doom for Biden, and the hand wringing over the “ Uncommitted ” vote ahead of Michigan’s Democratic primary ( which garnered over 100,000 votes ). Also, Whitmer’s name usually comes up in post-Biden Democrat political debate.
Whitmer’s reactions are really telling here. In a long, focus-grouped non-answer that ends with a modest statement of support for Israel, she initially speculates on whether Gaza will completely price Biden the election. Welker once more reminds us that the political aspirations of President Joe Biden are the first and purest victim of any disaster.
Therefore, the Gaza problem. Whitmer may have known that it was coming, hence the first made answer. Having expended her talking place, Whitmer goes to the non-responsive closure of the problem. Welker chose to ask a question about Trump’s approaching New York City trial instead of a second pass.
Whether or not what is happening in Gaza constitutes a “genocide” ( it is n’t ) should be simple to answer, regardless of whether you think it is. Whitmer’s savage nonresponse here is as uncovering as Welker’s deliberate failure to remove an answer.
