Two Russian journalists were detained by their government on “extremism” costs and given a stay of prison on Saturday pending a trial and investigation into allegations they worked for a group led by late Russian opposition lawmaker Alexei Navalny. Stephen Karelin and Konstantin Gabov both denied the accusations, saying they will be detained for at least two weeks before any trials will start. Each has a maximum sentence of six times and a minimum of two years in prison.
Gabov and Karelin are accused of creating content for a YouTube network move by Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption, which has been outlawed by Russian officials.
