Texas inspections again snarl truck traffic at Mexican border

Companies prepare for deficits as goods headed to U. S. delayed up to eight hours, CBP to maintain bridges available longer in Tornillo, Texas, Santa Teresa, N. M.

As the Texas Department of Public Safety resumes enhanced checks of corporate cars, trucks carrying goods to the U.S. are waiting in line for hours at the El Paso-Juarez border.

According to the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website, the trucks are waiting 480 minutes ( eight hours ) or more to cross the border at the Ysleta port of entry, when the typical wait time is an hour.

El Paso’s Border Patrol claims it is prepared for a new immigrant boom.

The long safety checks come days after numerous potential asylum applicants began arriving in big numbers on Juarez trains, a tactic Texas has used in the past to compel U.S. and Mexican leaders to stop large illegal immigration through the state. Some of those workers have been walking for km along the river passing through Texas Army National Guard and knife line that has been installed it. They have been crossing the Rio Grande into El Paso.

When something like this occurs, you can picture what it’s like to run a offer network. It really creates major devastation in the entire supply chain”, said Jerry Pacheco, president and CEO of the Border Industrial Association. The worst factor is that it’s impossible to predict when it will stop. You ca n’t even plan for this. Our cross-border trade is entirely hampered by this.

Cars are waiting up to eight hours to traverse from Mexico at the Ysleta port of entry on April 29, 2024, according to the official website for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The checks began on Saturday night, according to a deal see sent by CBP to business partners. That immediately led to a more than 10 % decrease in overall vehicle transportation. As of Monday, CBP has extended the time of observation at regional business bridges. The Santa Teresa, New Mexico, port of entry east of El Paso may be available from 6 a. m. to 10 p. m. through Friday. The Marcelino Serna harbor in Tornillo, Texas, to the west may open from 6 a. m. to 8 p. m.

In Juarez, business reps and shipping company associates called for an instant end to Texas “unnecessary” vehicle inspections, which they deemed political – more than a public health problem.

North American business leaders echoed that sentiment.

According to Pacheco, Texas DPS has never discovered anything significant on trucks passing across the border, despite this. ” It is a political thing, it’s Austin picking on El Paso”.

Border Report is awaiting a response from Texas DPS regarding comment. In addition to migrant surges, the state conducted enhanced inspections at the El Paso-Juarez border in 2021 and 2023.
