Officials in Mexico are investigating the abduction of a prominent Catholic Church priest. Since the preacher made headlines by attempting to broker a sort of truce between rival cartels that were engaged in a furious turf war in his community, the case has sparked a lot of outcry.
The Morelos Attorney General’s Office made it known this week that they were looking into the murder of Catholic Church pope Salvador Rangel in Guerrero.
The incident began on Saturday night when Rangel left his home in Juitepec, Morelos, trying to make his manner to Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Facts remain mysterious, but a group of people officially abducted him, stole cash from his addresses, and drugged him.
The priest was taken by unknown men to a nearby doctor in Morelos, where he was treated as an unknown. Authorities eventually identified him as the missing priest, El Universal reported.
This appears to have been an “express kidnapping,” a phrase used in Mexico to describe forced abductions in which victims are either forced to clean out their accounts or even attempt to extort money from them once more and then transfer them as soon as possible. The discussion surrounding the high-profile crime comes as the public opinion that Mexico is uncomfortable is growing as a result of the country’s visible softening of its opposition to drug cartels.
Bishop Salvador Rangel used his status as a well-known preacher to offer to serve as an intermediary between two foe criminal groups fighting for local control in Guerrero, earning reputation throughout Mexico. The preacher claimed at the time that all he cared about was bringing peace to the area.
