They have been exposed to practices that foster the perception of abuse or trauma from opposing viewpoints.
Due to the strain they experienced watching police tear up a new protest on school after students fiercely took control of a tower and illegally occupied it in support of the Arab reason, Columbia University legislation students are asking administrators to withdraw final exams and provide them all passing grades.
The Columbia Law Review editors have written a letter to school officials asking them to ax their final examination because the law students claim they have been “irrevocably shaken” and have cosigned it.
The letter, which was published by Above the Law, reads,” Video have been circulated of police officers wearing mob products mocking and brutalizing our individuals.” ” We and many of our classmates were unable to concentrate and become extremely personal as a result of the occurrences of last night.”
” We think that canceling tests may be appropriate in response to the degree of anxiety our fellow students have experienced.”
At issue is a new incident earlier this week in which demonstrators seized control of a building, Hamilton Hall, smashing panels, breaking through windows, and refusing to leave. Columbia has hosted extreme anti-Israel occupation-style camp protests since late April. Authorities had to step up to secure the location after the incident.
” More than 100 demonstrators were taken into custody during the assault”, NBC information reported, which added:” Law class final exams are usually grueling, usually lasting three or four hours at a time, according to JD Advising. In their first month of law school, a person’s exam scores are of utmost importance because they frequently have significant impact on their employment prospects.
Jonathan Turley, a professor of law at George Washington University, made the case that the students may not receive the deduction.
Rules students must be able to handle these situations without ceasing to breathe as a result of their anxiety. Our industry is filled with pain and stress. Our workplace is the result of our actions. In those instances, we do not have the opportunity of being a little- show. We appear and advocate for others, Turley wrote on his website, noting that the “law class has postponed exams due to the demonstrations but has not canceled the exams.”
According to Reuters, law professor Gillian Lester sent a message to individuals on Wednesday that said,” All the laws school’s final exams are taking place remotely rather than in-person.” Individuals may choose to have their examination graded on a pass or fail base.
According to Turley, law students who claim to have experienced trauma, especially those from a prestigious law college, do not benefit from this job.
The kids offered an alternative to allowing them to take tests that passed or failed, but they did not choose that option. They emphasized, however, that “instituting an optional Pass/Fail policy is not really optional when employers will recognize that some students have good grades while others do not… [ T]he opens the door to the introduction of extreme bias in the hiring process.”
It is correct that attorneys are likely to hire individuals with the ability to control high-stress conditions. This text makes the exact same suggestion: Columbia law students.
In addition, the question is how such legislation students are physically ready for the pressures of practice when protests” shut them down” and make them “impossibly focused. They have been exposed to systems that foster pain or abuse from opposing viewpoints, though.
Individuals have asked to be excused from finals before in this request in response to difficult demonstrations. Individuals from all over the country made similar calls following George Floyd’s death in 2020.
