LONDON: Britain’s opposition Labour Party accused Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday of lying in a pre- election debate when he said Labour would increase taxes by 2, 000 pounds ($ 2, 554.40 ) for each family.
Sunak frequently used the figure in a television debate with Labour leader Keir Starmer on Tuesday, whose Conservative Party is struggling in view elections before the July 4 vote.
If Labour wins the election, Sunak’s Conservative Party last month released what it claimed were “formal Treasury and separate costings” of Labour laws that revealed a 38.5 billion ounce black gap over the course of four years.
Labour refuted the claim at the time, and on Wednesday, it highlighted a letter from the top official at the UK’s finance ministry, which claimed legal workers had not been involved in the production or demonstration of the costing and that it should not be presented as an official measure.
Rachel Reeves, Labour’s leading economic policy official,” the letter from the continuous secretary of the Treasury confirms what Labour have said last night, that the prime minister lied in the conversation last night.”
Reeves has ruled out increases to the income tax and social security contributions during the upcoming legislative session.
She was questioned by broadcasters as to why Starmer had not intervened more quickly in the discussion to refute Sunak’s assertion.
” Keir Starmer was very clear last night that what the prime minister has said was total garbage.” I would go further than that: the prime minister lied in the debate last night about Labour’s tax plans”, she said.
” Labour will not increase taxes on the working class. I am very clear about that”.
On Wednesday, Sunak repeated his claim in a video posted on social media platform X that reads,” If you think Labour will win, start saving.”
